Description

American Oystercatchers have heavy red bills, yellow eyes, white wing stripes, red eye rings, and stocky shapes. The juveniles have a darker eyes, brown scaling on the back, and darker bills. They may take about 2 or more months from hatching until being independent. American Oystercatchers are found on beaches, mudflats and shell bars having a coastal distribution in the United States and Mexico. They each measure about 17.5 inches in length and weigh about 1.4 pounds. Several breeding pairs of American Oystercatchers nest at Nickerson Beach Park, in Lido Beach, New York. The breeding pairs are very aggressive and protective of their nest and hatchlings.

This adult American Oystercatcher walking and splashing in the shallow surf was photographed at the Nickerson Beach Park, in Lido Beach, New York on 7-26-2014. I used a Nikon D800 camera body and a Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/4000 sec, f/7.1, ISO 800.
