Description
Allen's Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin) is a species of hummingbird that is found in the woods, meadows, and gardens of coastal California north of Santa Barbara, and in a small portion of southern Oregon coast. Allen's Hummingbird is barely distinguishable from the Rufous Hummingbird, except that it is slightly smaller, with a smaller tail and a slightly longer bill. It measures about 3.75 inches in length and about 0.11 ounces in weight. It is compact-shaped, aggressive, has buffy orange flanks, white breast, orange-red gorget, solid green back, and a partly orange rump. Allen's Hummingbirds have a high metabolic rate and need to feed nearly hourly on nectar from flowers or on insects crawling on flower blossoms.
This adult Allen's Hummingbird hovering and collecting nectar from red flowers was photographed at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, in San Marino, California on 7-12-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/3200 sec, f/6.3, ISO 2500. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens are located in San Marino, California, about 12 miles from Los Angeles; sixteen or more permanently themed gardens within the Botanical Gardens cover about 130 acres. The plant in this photograph is a Hummingbird Bush (Justicia californica), which is a deciduous perennial shrub in the family Acanthaceae.

Thank you so much for explaining the difference between the Rufous and Allen! I have had BOTH this year. The Rufous have been so aggressive, but this last time, the Allens were very nice...aggressive, but willing to have their photos taken. I love this. I will have to look for then the next time I am at the Huntington Library. It is a great place. Also, the Arboretum near the Santa Anita Race Track is a great place for photos. FL
