Description
The Alamo has come to symbolize a heroic struggle against overwhelming odds and a place where men made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom in the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. For this reason the Alamo is considered the Shrine of Texas Liberty. You will be reminded of this (men) if you enter and do not remove your hat. As of July 5 2015 it (along with the other four Spanish missions in San Antonio TX) joined many places worldwide as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the first time that a Texas site has been named as a World Heritage site, meaning that not only is it important locally but that is has "outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity" by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The Alamo was founded in the early 18th century as the Mission San Antonio de Valero, one of the early Spanish Roman Catholic missions in Texas. It wasn't until the 19th century that it became a fortress, and it is most famous for the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. The quiet of the early morning hours was the best time to photograph the Alamo in San Antonio TX. Not to mention the coolest time where it was already 80 degrees at 6 am! While I was photographing, I had a nice talk with the night guard there. FUN FACT: Lights installed in the paving stones in front of the structure in the last few years cast shadows above the ledge above the door that look like tombstones. Unintentional of course but rather fitting.
