Acorn barnacle. Acorn barnacle (Balanus balanus) feeding, using its branched appendages (cirri) to catch plankton. This species of acorn barnacle is native to the colder seas of the northern hemisphere. Barnacles are hermaphrodite filter-feeding crustaceans that attach themselves to rocks and other surfaces in intertidal zones.
