Description
While I was painting sunflowers for our living room, I kept having ideas for things that would be fun to try in a sunflower, but did not match our color scheme. I decided to paint one more set of sunflowers with all my stored-up abstract ideas. It was a lot of fun! Much of the this is painted with a palette knife with paint straight from the tube. Whenever you paint flower petals, you run into the problem of making the petals distinct from each other, as they are all nearly the same color, hence the outlining of the petals here. The original reference photo had the sunflowers partly in light and partly an in shadow, which accounts for the wide variation of values in the painting. I was experimenting with interchange between the "ground" and the "subject" of the painting instead of clearly delineating the two, which is why the background seens to come forward in places and recede in places.

Hello Karen, Thanks so much for you encouragement! As I mentioned, this was serendipity after I did several other more conventional sunflower paintings and was thinking all along about ideas I would like to try but couldn't do on the other paintings because my new ideas didn't match our living room! Sunflowers are amazingly expressive subjects. I saw your photos and they really looked great, best of luck to you!

Hello Arthur Just a note to tall you how much I love your colorful sunflower painting! I cannot paint (or draw, more to the point!) but this is the type of painting I would love to do. I have loved sunflowers and taken numerous photos of them. Continued success in your artwork. I have added this one to my Favorites!
