Description
Abbott's Sphinx Moth (Sphecodina abbottii) larva. PLEASE NOTE THE FLY that is sitting on the caterpillar looking to lay ova on the larva. This is a 4th instar larva resting on Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia). As a larva this species feeds primarily at night and spends the day resting, camouflaged on the main bark covered stem of the vine. This species also feeds on Grape and Ampelopsis. Range is found throughout eastern north america west to Texas. They are spring and early summer fliers and are single brooded through much of their range. This caterpillar was photographed in situ in central Pennsylvania.
