Description
This is a befitting tribute to the late Queen of England, Elizabeth II, who passed on--leaving a void in the world after being the longest reigning Monarch in British history. I created this work to commemorate many highlights in Queen Elizabeth's life and as a reflection of her love of Cape Town and South Africa.
This artwork, by Dr. Michael Durst, is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth’s 96 years and to her love of Cape Town’s flora and fauna, especially her love of Protea. Ever since she celebrated her 21st Birthday in Cape Town, the enchantment for the botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch has enthralled her. This latest through the years and she continued to celebrate the wins at the Chelsea Garden Show that Kirstenbosch received, especially with the rare Protea displays of South Africa’s national flower.
The background of the art work is made up of press clippings and photos of the high points in Queen Elizabeth’s life, from her baby photos to childhood memories, her coronation, and her Diamond Jubilee. It shows her deep ties with her family and even her beloved Corgi dogs. The photos are deliberately faded and out of focus to add to the mystery of the past and to exemplify that as one ages memories become naturally distant.
Included in the background are photos of her connection to South Africa…a newspaper headline of her 21st birthday and events she and her husband, Phillip experienced, such as walking over a suspended rope bridge, a dance that she and her sister, Princess Margaret attended, and even a glimpse of the cable car that she and Phillip took to the top of Table Mountain. And who could forget the iconic automobile ride with President Nelson Mandela? Even South Africa’s current President, Cyril Ramaphosa is shown with the Queen on his state visit.
As interesting as the background is, the real focus is on the numerals 9 and 6, made up of various types of Protea and fynbos as well as Sugar Birds which are the constant companions to the Protea. Each is detailed by the artist to give a colourful impact to the symbolic tribute to the longest reign of any Monarch in the history of England.
The original work is available. Contact the artist on this site.
Also available for purchase is a signed and hand-embossed Masterpiece Edition, which has been meticulously matched to the original. By adding texture with many layers of acrylic paint and varnish, it is hand-embellished so that it replicates the actual painting itself. Thus, Masterpiece Editions become a one-of-kind works of art, by capturing the light and providing the depth of colours to create a three-dimensional effect. These Masterpiece Editions come with a Certificate of Authenticity and are numbered and signed by the artist.
All Collectors can request a Certificate of Authenticity which will increase the value of the print. If you wish to purchase a print, just message the Artist on Fine Art America with your email and delivery address so a copy of the Certificate can be sent to you. It will be mailed within 30 days after the purchase date.
