This is one of four lions that "guard" the William Howard Taft Bridge, named for the 27th President of the United States, in Washington, DC (there are two lions on both sides of the western and eastern ends of the bridge, giving the effect that the lions "guard" it). The Taft Bridge, which is part of Connecticut Avenue, crosses over a gorge in Rock Creek Park, and connects the neighborhoods of Dupont Circle to its west with Woodley Park to its east. The bridge was built between 1897 and 1907, and the lions were made near the completion of the bridge, around 1906, by sculptor Roland Hinton Perry. (This lion is on the northwest corner of the bridge.)

As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
