Description
This portrait of J.C. Ward and Clarence the mule was commissioned by his son Lamar. Lamar kept a newspaper clipping from the newspaper now known as the Greenville News from 1972, in is wallet. More than 30 years later, Lamar asked if I could paint this picture of his dad from the clipping. Wow, it was folded, faded, yellow, and very hard to discern. I attempted to locate the original photographer or even a copy of the newspaper image without success, so I gave it my best shot from the clipping. This image was painted using an airbrush, and only 3 colors of Holbein liquid acrylic; orange, blue, and sepia. The values and textures are made using erasers of different hardness and an x-acto knife blade. I tried to block in the big shapes of light and dark, then made loose connections with texture and improvisation.
