Description
Dover Castle has been called the Key to England because of its strategic location, at Dover on the English Channel, being seen as the point closest to the continent. The current castle dates back to the 12th century, although there are remains from much earlier, from the time of the Romans or even earlier. The current Castle also contains within it the remain of an ancient Roman lighthouse. The Castle also played a role during the second world war when there threats of an imminent invasion of Britain by the Nazis, and served as a command center and a hospital complex.
The sunset from Dover Castle is superb, with the sun setting over the English channel in a riot of colors. In this case, the straight lines were broken by the outline of a bird.
