I loved the card. Message inside was perfect (just like I requested) Only comment - the picture seemed too large for the card (glue showing on the side) Next time I will down size the picture. I have ordered many cards from fineartamerica and have been very pleased with the artist selection and quality of the art. Paul Cutright

Artist's Description

Erotically charged 1890 visualisation by French academic artist Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904) of a story from Greek mythology involving a sculptor who falls in love with a statue he has carved. As the sculptor, Pygmalion, reaches up to deliver a kiss, only the top half of the statue has transformed into a living woman, the rest of her body still pale white marble or in the process of transformation. In the original myth, the statue seems not to have had a name, but in later versions she became Galatea, a sea nymph and the original ivory carving switched to a marble statue. The same tale, which unusually in Greek mythology has a happy ending, became the basis for George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play Pygmalion, which in turn inspired the play and movie My Fair Lady. Numerous other artists have tackled the same subject, including Bronzino, Daumier, Edward Burne-Jones, Rodin, Paul Delvaux, Goya, Boucher and others. Gerome's oddly theatrical staging might have been inspired by any number of stage...
