Description
DNA packaging. Computer artwork showing how DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is packaged within eukaryotic cells. Two DNA strands, consisting of a sugar-phosphate backbone attached to nucleotide bases, twist into a double helix. The DNA double helix is tightly coiled around histone proteins to form nucleosomes (centre, yellow). These are then coiled together and further packaged into chromosomes (not shown). In mammalian cells approximately 2 m of linear DNA have to be packed into a nucleus of roughly 10 µm diameter).
