Description
Fungal spores. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fungal spores on a fruiting body of an Aspergillus sp. fungus. The name for such a fruiting body is a conidiophore. It forms under certain conditions at the end of some of the threads (hyphae) that make up the fungus. This conidiophore's hypha is seen at lower left. The conidiophore itself consists of chains of numerous conidia (spores, small, round) that are dispersed on the wind to form a new fungal body. Inhalation of spores by susceptible people may cause an allergic reaction known as aspergillosis. This fungus mostly grows on decomposing organic matter. Magnification x360 when printed 10cm wide.
