Osler began his career at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, before becoming the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University, UK. Considered the father of modern medicine, he contributed towards reforms of medical education, founding the practice of residency where medical students received practical training in hospitals.
