Description
Translation (loosely): SORROW BEHIND THE FESTIVE WREATHS
During the Pahiyas Festival in the town of Lukban, Quezon Province in the Philippines, the town folk adorn their houses with colorful wreaths and chandeliers called kipings (colorful and edible rice wafers) to celebrate the harvest and honor the patron saint of farmers San Isidro Labrador.
In the face of the elaborate and sometimes costly celebration of bounty, many people in the Philippines are still mired in poverty and live in hand-to-mouth existence. There is cause for celebration and yet behind the merriment there is also cause for sadness for the people who have little to eat.

Beautiful and lively. Love the bright colors in this cheerful work, Paul. Congrats on your First Place win. Please feel free to join the Contest Winners First Place on FineArtAmerica, if you haven't already, and upload this image to the group. Vote. :)

Thanks Kristin! There is an irony in this painting if you read the description. It is colorful and bright yet the festival decorations are bleeding. Thanks for the invitation and I will surely join the group.
