Description
Plant research. Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) plants growing in pots in a laboratory. The plants with the dark red bracts (lower right) have been exposed to short wavelength ultraviolet (UVC) light, while the plants with bright red bracts (left) have not. Exposing plants to UVC light is known as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). It is a sterilisation method that is used in a variety of applications, such as food, air and water purification. UV light has been a known mutagen (mutation-causing agent) for more than 100 years.
