Illustration showing the motor effect. A flexible wire suspended between the poles of a powerful magnet moves when a current is flowing through it. The movement occurs because the magnetic field of the magnet reacts with the magnetic field of the current through the wire, producing a resultant force on the wire. The direction of the force is determined by the direction of the current and the direction of the magnetic field.
