Description
Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica), light micrograph. This tremotode worm and endoparasite lives in the bile duct of the sheep, its primary host. The anterior cone (pink, far right) has an oral sucker around the mouth at one end (right) and a ventral sucker (left) at its base These suckers enable the worm to resist being washed away by the bile flow. The worm is hermaphrodite and both sex organs are seen here: the testes (pink central mass), a penis (dark pink near the ventral sucker). The black areas are the uteri containing the eggs. Magnification: x3 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
