Description
Skin cancer. Immunofluorescent Light Micrograph of squamous carcinoma cells, cultured from a tumour. This highly malignant cancer arises in epithelium typically of the skin. The cell nuclei (blue) are large; cytoplasm stains orange for keratin, a fibrous skin protein that appears to radiate from the nuclei. Squamous cell carcinoma can be caused by high exposure to sunlight. It is common in pale-skinned fair-haired people over age 60. Immunofluorescence is a technique which uses anti- bodies to attach fluorescent dyes to specific tissues and to molecules within the cell. Magnification x125 at 35mm; x225 at 6x4.5cm size.
