Description
Iceberg formation. Ice floating on the sea after calving (breaking away) from an ice front. An ice front is the vertical cliff of an ice shelf or glacier. Calving is one way in which icebergs are formed. When an ice front arrives at the coast it becomes less stable and cracks develop. Huge chunks of ice often fall into the sea, which then float away as icebergs. Photographed off Adelaide Island, Antarctica.
