Downy Woodpecker - is a small woodpecker with an all white belly. Very similar, almost identical, to the Hairy Woodpecker, but the Downy has a shorter, thinner bill. The male Downy has the red nape, The female does not. Some Juveniles has a red mark near their forehead. The Downy is a non-migrator. They are a year-round resident of Connecticut. The feed on insects, but will come to bird feeders that have seeds and/or suet.
This Downy capture was taken in Monroe, Connecticut.
