Description
Blocked fallopian tubes. Coloured hysterosalpingogram (X-ray) of the pelvis of a 25 year old woman with blocked fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes lead off either side of the uterus (womb, dark purple area at centre in top three images), but are not visible here as the blockages prevent the contrast medium from entering the tubes. The damage may be a result of pelvic inflammation, which is most often caused by sexually transmitted diseases. Blocked fallopian tubes are a cause of infertility. Treatment is with surgical unblocking or removal of the tubes. A hysterosalpingogram is taken after the introduction of a contrast medium to the uterus via a catheter (bottom centre) in the vagina.
