The word is French, derived from the Italian 'svelto' , and was first used around 1817 - the year Jane Austen died - although one might be more inclined to think more of the sleek flapper styles of the Roaring Twenties. However, the Regency dresses were primarly simple;the Empire Line dresses, inspired by the Grecian ladies of classical art, were popular first with Napoleon's Josephine, and had lttle ornamentation.
Polished, tasteful, elegant, slender : these are other adjectives that come to mind when we think of 'svelte'-- all which define the stalk of the beautiful calla lily.
The Calla Lily is not really a lily at all: it actually belongs the same family as the caladium and philodendron. It is used at special occasions. Commonly white , this bloom can also come black (and other colours).While parts of this plan...
