My favorite new palette: baking parchment on a cookie sheet. (It helps if there's something to actually stick the paper to the sheet.). I haven't tried a disposable palette, but I imagine this is what they're like.
More drying space: use the Christmas stocking hangers that rest on the mantle (but move the paintings before using the fireplace)
Even more drying space: those cheap (I mean REALLY cheap!) tabletop easels. Seriously, all they have to do is sit there and make sure the painting doesn't touch anything else.
Brushes vs knives: clean up is easier with knives, I haven't learned knives well enough to get the detail I get with brushes.
Suppliers: so far, I can find nothing that beats Jerry's Artarama for price.
