The questions I keep getting asked

I'm new to this. I turned 50 this year.

Now that I've decided to take a huge leap of faith and put my work on display for all the world to see the two most often questions asked of me is "When did you figure out that you could paint?" and "How did you start to paint?"

I don't really remember. I think I always doodled when I was little. The picture I've posted with this blog entry reminds me that I could sit for hours and be entertained by visual things. This shed was like a giant camera. The light would somehow enter through the windows and images from outside would show up reversed on the wall. I think this is where I began my fascination with cameras.

My family has always been creative - gingerbread houses, decorated doll cakes, photography, art, gardening, music. I feel fortunate that I've been able to experiment and try new things - even if they didn't always work out (piano lessons and I can still only play chopsticks).

So, I guess the answer to the question of when - I always knew, I think life took over and I just forgot. And the answer to the question of how - I remembered what it was like to be little and fearless. You can't really make a mistake with art. You just cover it up with more paint. I kinda like that.
