September Photography Tips - Silhouettes

I hope you all got out during the dark hours last month and got a good shot of the Super Moon, some Star Trails or City scenes. For this month we will want to be out in the early morning or late afternoon for the most part. Of course, silhouettes can be done indoors too.

If you are outside, the angle of the sun is key and if there is a bright fluffy cloud around, that will help frame your shot for even more drama.
The past few newsletters, I've stressed the need for a tripod. For these shots, I think that hand-held will work as long as you remember the focal length to minimum shutter speed formula - 200 mm lens use 1/200 sec or greater. 50 mm lens use 1/50 sec or greater. One gizmo that might make your shots work better is a Neutral Density filter because you will be shooting into the light. The other thing to watch for are lens flares. These are blobs of unwanted light when shooting at a close angle to the light source. If you get these, try re-positioning yourself, using your lens hood or have a friend cast a shadow on your lens with a piece of cardboard. But wait! If you are at a small aperture (f/22 or greater) those blobs may look like stars and maybe you would want that effect.

Lets start. Please follow the link for the rest of the story.
