Painting Beach Rocks

Currently on the easel is a rock study that is nearing completion. I've never painted a scene solely made of rocks, but in this case it contains so many interesting dimensions that it continues to lure me in.

The rocks are sitting in wet sand, having been bandied about by the waves. When the water recedes, little sand trails are formed, which brings movement and contrast. The rocks have amazing yet subtle color. The sand was not just gray. In different areas, you could see either browns in the form of raw ochre or burnt umber mixed with the gray or blues. The moss on the stones was cool viridian and warm earth green, muted and pure in specs.

This painting captures a moment in time as with every wave, the sand trails change and the pebbles are again juxtaposed.

I'll post this in the gallery when completed at which time it will be available for sale.
