I hate that bedroom tax! The most stupid thing ever

Andrew, I am sorry to hear about your situation. I would also suggest the local Citizens Advice Bureau. I just had a look and there are a lot of local charities in your area that might be able to help if you get in touch? If you would like donations you need to provide a link to where people can go to make the donation so that people who would like to help can do so.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I donate to local organizations set up to help and advise people who need a helping hand. There must be some in your area, often they have a van or truck and volunteers that can help.

I too am so sorry to hear of your situation. been in a many of them. and charitable organizations is a very good way also try your local churches you will find that the Lord does help.
some churches even have group boards where people can post things. maybe you can post a flier, or find a flier. I pray that everything will turn out good for you.

What is a bedroom tax?

couldn't you just convert the bedroom into a huge closet and say - no more bedroom?

i would assume a bedroom tax has to do with livable square feet? kind of why old houses didn't have closets, but Armour's instead, because they taxed by the sq ft.

No Mike. Bedroom tax has to be paid for the extra room. Closets or not.

I would suggest contacting the local college about taking a lodger. You may be allowed to sublet one room as they are relaxing rules on that because of the bedroom tax I say college as students or lecturers may need a room in a house

So I have a three bedroom house and it is just me and my girlfriend living here. Would I have to pay a tax on the two "extra" bedrooms there?

It is for people on benefits

If they are of working age and have extra bedrooms in their home, they have to pay for each spare room and they do not get help for them in a rent rebate

It is basically taxing people who do not have income, for having space in their home. It has caused a lot of problem for people already having problems

If you were having to get housing benefit then yes, you would have to pay for those rooms

The amount of rent you can claim housing benefit for is reduced by:

14% if you have one 'spare' bedroom
25% if you have two or more 'spare' bedrooms

but what would they count as a bedroom - and how do they know?
