Artist Jessie J. De La Portillo is an American artist born in Miami, Florida in the mid 60's to a Latin family with roots in Spain. His family root name is De La Portillo and his family old roots come out of Italy. He is known more in the art world as J. Portillo and many of his artworks are signed J. Portillo. His main buyers and collectors of his art are from the U.S., U.K, South America, and Middle East.
Jís family moved around to many areas in the U.S, such as Miami, the Florida Keys, West Palm Beach, Orlando, New Your, Michigan, Illinois, and other areas. He bought his first art oil set at the age of seven in the early 70ís and started to make his first oil paintings. Soon after his family seeing what he could do one day his father woke him up on a Saturday morning and took him to enter his first public art contest at an art show in the Florida Keys. The oil painting was one of his first oils and it was a baby tiger face with a blue sky background. J won 2nd place in the overall contest and surprise many people at the contest that a kid of that age could do an oil painting. Try to understand back in the 70s not to many kids where doing oil paintings. In school J became the school artist for the teacher and kids. Many times the school teachers called on him to do art projects for their school, such as Christmas art works, artworks for teacher projects and students. Basically he was the kid artist of the school. He won many art contest at school and many times came in 1st, 2nd, and sometime 3rd in place. You see, J was a person that was born with the gift of making art and he always love it from the time he could remember.
Later in his teem he kept doing his artwork, but school and other things of his life kept him from putting more time into his art. As an adult in his twenties work and the ladies in his life took-up most of his time, but from time-to-time he still found the brake to do what he love, art projects like drawings, paintings and even dimension artworks. But, somehow art ended up following him, because sometimes he ended up doing art at his job for his bosses. That would happen to him because when someone found out he was an artist they started to ask him to do art projects for them. We need to remember this was back in the 80s and art for your office or business would cost you money because there was no internet to go and copy some art you needed for your business cards or paperwork. So, when business owners found out they had an artist it was great from them because it would save them money. In fact such was the case in the 80ís in Ft. Lauderdale when his company's CEO found out he was an artist they gave him the project of redoing a large sign that was on the side of one of their buildings, he wasn't not the company artist he was one of companyís retail manager.
J in the mid-2000s went to work in the Middle East as a DoD contractor in law enforcement and is in the Middle East at this time. But he has now once again gotten very involve with his artwork and is again selling his work, but it is not easy for him to sell his artwork outside of the Middle East, because of the high shipping cost to the U.S. and other parts of the world. So, now days much of his art is being sold as prints by companies in the U.S that make his artwork in high quality prints on paper or canvas with framed or without framed and ship them to the buyers and collectors.
J says ďAs an artist the best feeling I can get is knowing that someone has welcome one of my artworks to their home or place of work. This is my best feeling as an artist, so for those who have welcome my art I would like to thank you very much for your kindness.
