Born Upper Hutt New Zealand. Educated Taita College and Victoria University. I developed my passion for painting in the 1980ís while recovering from chronic illness. The years between 1993 and 2006 were spent living in the North East of England. Extensive travels during this period and since have had a profound influence on my style and approach to painting. December 2006 saw my return to Waikanae where I now live and paint.
My art is about giving plastic definition to emotion. When painting I escape into another dimension, an inner world of the imagination. My paintings are intensely autobiographical and explore my emotional relationship to the world I find myself in. Particular events trigger a response in me but when painting it is the inner world that manifests. My recent work involves exploring ways to give visual form to the abstract language of music. In the last couple of years this has evolved into painting the sounds of the New Zealand bush. I love walking in the lush forests of New Zealand and imagine how I may translate the sounds of bird calls into shapes and colours.
