I remember that I was 9 years old when I decided that I wanted to be a photographer. In science class we made a pinhole camera from a shoebox and a piece of aluminum foil. By placing a piece of photo paper in the box and exposing the paper to light let in through the pinhole in the foil we were able to develop a reverse image of the scene. I studied graphic arts at Coldwater High School in Michigan and upon graduation I joined the US Navy as a photographer.
