I think I’ve always been an artist. I studied Fine Art in college, but after school, with the necessity of earning a living and raising a family, I worked as an illustrator and graphic designer. I always considered myself lucky to be able to earn my way doing something creative, but I still longed to return to fine art.
“Someday I’ll start painting again”, I said to myself for many years. Then Hurricane Katrina hit. We live just north of New Orleans, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. We were luckier than many of our neighbors whose houses flooded or who had falling trees crash through their roof, we narrowly escaped major damage.
I realized that if everything can change so quickly it makes no sense to wait for “someday”. Whatever it is you long to do, do it today. So I started painting again.
It feels so good to walk out to my studio in the morning. I designed the building to reflect the charm of the Craftsman Style house we live in, and I’m pleased to say it does. But what I really love about it, is that it’s a dedicated space. It’s used for one thing and one thing only. My art.
