“Among all the things I do, I feel most true to myself when I am painting.”
Becky Kim was born in 1958 in the country side of South Korea. When she was very young she was more interested in music. As a teenager, her passion for visual arts grew and never ceased. Becky studied nursing in South Korea and came to the United States in 1982. Although she is still working as an RN, she now has more time to devote to her art. Her favorite medium is Oil, but she also uses Watercolor; her favorite technique of painting is using palette knives. Becky and her husband reside in Fairfax, Virginia and have four grown children.
Painting is like ‘Deep Breathing’ for me; it has provided the fresh air I needed. When I am alone and able to paint, I enjoy my solitude. The negative aspects of life are transformed into a new world of mystical beauty.
I primarily paint portraits; the landscape of the human face brings endless desire and satisfaction to me. I admire the unique qualities of human expression and strive to portray the sincerity and dignity I see therein.
I believe the purpose of visual art is to enrich our lives. The purpose of my art is for me to connect with my community and to share the beauty of this world and that which exists beyond what we can see. Every person has his or her own unique experiences and emotional reactions. Because of this, I leave room for personal interpretation of my work. I enjoy creating opportunities for people to explore their personal human experience through my artwork. I hope my art will touch and enrich the souls of others as it has mine.
