Photography of the famous pirate ship Jose Gasparilla sailing out of Tampa Bay during the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival. This photo shows the ship leaving Tampa just after a storm with the city of Tampa in the background. 2/2010.
The story behind this image - In 2011 the Gasparilla fare well event was a very cold and windy one, there were very few people out due to the stormy conditions. As the pirate ship Jose Gasparilla (Seen in the image) began leaving Tampa after the pirates gave up the keys to the city to the Mayor of Tampa. The crew of pirates piled in to the infamous ship and left town. I braved the stormy condition and set up my camera on Harbor Island to get this amazing image of the ship, the storm, and the city just as a break in the clouds opened up. I think the stormy sky adds to the pirate feel of the work and for me epitomizes what Gasaprilla is all about...
