When Wednesday, July 10, 2013 7—9 PM
Who “Art has always been a part of me.  Through the years I have worked in varied artistic mediums...each medium evolving on its own and at the same time coming together." I am native to California and reside in the Central Valley.  It is through art I found spiritual healing and within my art, I share a reverence for the life force, which connects all beings. In gratitude to the spirit that inspires, using contemporary interpretations from ancient motifs and images from cultures that honor the earth, on gourd masks and vessels, my work is a continuation of early art forms. My paintings are of similar themes as well as contemporary ideas that awaken the spirit and offer a sense of inner peace. It is my hope that my art evokes something ancient and spiritual and one finds a reverence, which is both joyful and healing,” Valerie Runningwolf
What: Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can be used — some containing other types of waxes, dammar resin, linseed oil, or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment.
