Piece Title: “Going to the Sun”
Medium: Stone and wood
Residency Park: Glacier National Park

Artist Statement

I participated in NPS residences at three sites: Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. These residencies have had a profound and lasting impact on my work as a whole, allowing me the time and space to absorb the richness each place has to offer. The experiences have served as a reservoir of ideas that I’ve drawn upon for years.

I conducted demonstrations at each park to help enrich the visitors’ experience. I gave public stone-carving demonstrations, interacting with the park visitors and guiding them while they tried their own hand at carving. Many people had never actually seen stone carved before much less tried it themselves.

Rock Mountain National Park and Glacier National Park each hold one of my sculptures in their permanent collections and it is my hope the sculptures continue to enhance the enjoyment of the visitors to the parks.

“Longs Peak” is the marble sculpture from the Rocky Mountain National Park residency. It is a detailed portrait of 14,255’ Longs Peak I carved after climbing to the summit. It is permanently displayed in the Fall River visitor center.

“Going to the Sun” is the alabaster sculpture I sculpted as a result of the Glacier National Park residency. It was conceived as an interpretation of the sheer verticality of the topography of Glacier and incorporates carved stone and wood representing the iconic mountains of the park.
