THREE DAY OIL PORTRAIT PAINTING FROM A PHOTO WORKSHOP

Painted Ladies, Inc., are proud to present this fabulous workshop with our very own, Talya Johnson!

October 17, 18, and 19, 2014
10am – 4pm with a half our break for lunch

From concept, through photoshoot, notan, sketches, to final finished painting, this intensive oil portrait workshop will give you the skills to take your portraits to the next level. This comprehensive workshop is geared for studio painters painting from photos. The workshop will cover:

what makes a good reference photo
how to prepare a reference photo for painting
the importance of a notan in choosing your composition
how to create a notan and composition that emote your voice and point of view
measuring techniques in working from a photo, finding what works for you!
limitations of working from a photo and how to compensate for them
choosing and identifying the color of the light source, and why it matters
choosing colors, color properties, applied color theory
organizing the palette for maximum color range
techniques of applying paint, making your mark!
techniques for greater accuracy and likeness
best practices for an archival oil painting
best practices for using reference photos (copyright and model releases)
bringing an accurate portrait to life
critiquing your own work
setting realistic goals
overcoming obstacles
finding joy and meaning in the journey
And so much more! There will be impromptu demos, as needed as well as a short demo each morning and afternoon. Each student will receive ample individual attention to ensure they go home with their own masterpiece. All the participants will be painting from the same reference photo to better demonstrate technique and diversity in painting styles. Arrive ready to learn, and stretch your abilities.

This class is appropriate for intermediate to advanced/professional painters who have some experience working with oils. All colors will be provided.
BRING THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES

Easel
canvas, linen or panel (12×16 or 16×20)
palette
palette knife
brushes of different sizes
Gamsol
paint brush washer
paper towels
garbage bag
gloves (optional)
apron (optional, but we are going to get messy!)
drop cloth
sack lunch
snacks
water bottle
All colors and solvent free gel will be provided
You are free to leave your easels up after class on Friday and Saturday
