Paint the Pavement: A Live Art Project
A group of Tallahassee artists will paint two road intersections as part of a live art project on Novemeber 2, 2013 from 6:00-10:00am in the Market District in northeast Tallahassee. This has never been done in our area and is the first of this kind of public art...a live art project. The public is encouraged to turn out and watch the group of artists, teachers and students as they create this permanent outdoor art installation as part of the City of Tallahassee's "Place Making" effort.
Art teachers from Gilchrist Elementary, Maclay School and Brush & Palette Art Studio, their students and local artists have formed two teams to paint the intersections at Market Street at Maclay Commerce Blvd & Martin Hurst at Timberlane with specially formulated highway paint. The colorful project is meant to be a traffic calming device in these busy intersections as well as creating sense of place for the Market District. The City will be on hand to close the streets during the four hour event. The public is invited to watch the design unfold.
The group includes Joanna Angelos, Susie Peacock, Kelly Pettit, Pam Talley, Julie McBride, Cathy Hathaway, Debra Lachter and Marcy Johnson and will grow as these artists choose their teams. The Painting the Pavement project will be officially unveiled on the following Saturday, November 9th during the Market District's Mayhem Event, a day of fun, food, music and art show for the shopping district.
Painting the Pavement projects have been used around the country by residential and commercial areas as a creative way to slow traffic in busy intersections.
