Migraine Action Art Exhibition

The Migraine Action Art Exhibition.

Visit www.mikejory.co.uk during May or June 2012, purchase a painting, print or gift and raise money for charity Migraine Action.

Artist Mike Jory is holding an online exhibition of paintings to raise funds for national migraine charity Migraine Action.
Mike has suffered from chronic migraine for 20 years but finds painting constantly rewarding. ‘One of the great things about art is that you can do a painting in stages, so it is an activity which one can fit around migraine attacks’ says Mike. He continues ‘Migraine can make it difficult to progress in life, whether in one’s career or a hobby, but producing art regularly has provided me with a thread of stability over the years, each project brings with it something new to learn and the sense of accomplishment upon completing a painting is always a joy’.
Mike exhibits in galleries across the South West of England, in major London galleries and his images which have appeared on television and in the national press are in private collections around the world.
The artist’s work focuses predominantly on animal and landscape paintings but he also creates figure paintings, portraits, hidden image pictures, murals and cartoons. The exhibition includes original paintings, drawings and high quality giclee prints. In addition a wide range of merchandise is available to which the customer can add their own personal message making for truly unique gifts. With gift prices starting at a couple of pounds and the most expensive original paintings selling for £1500 there is something for everyone! A percentage of all purchases made through the exhibition website will be donated to Migraine Action, a charity which offers support and information to the one in seven people in the UK affected by migraine.
Joanna Hamilton-Colclough, Director of Migraine Action, says: “As a migraineur himself, Mike knows only too well the suffering that migraine can cause, not only the individual themselves but also their family and friends. We are extremely grateful to Mike for his support via this online exhibition which we hope will be a great success. Funds raised will help Migraine Action to continue its vital services which include a telephone helpline, specialist nurse service and over 150 information leaflets for those affected by what remains a much-misunderstood condition.”
The exhibition which is sponsored by Alpha Stim Southwest runs from May 1st to June 30th 2012 and is available at www.mikejory.co.uk.
Artists and Migraine
One of the symptoms of migraine is an aura which may feature visual disturbances including distorted vision, flashing lights and / or zig zag patterns. Famous artists who have suffered from migraine include Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet and it has been speculated that some of the unique effects they achieved may have been due to their illness.

About Migraine
Migraine is a neurological condition typically characterised by severe headaches that are accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light or sound with the illness typically preventing the sufferer from conducting normal activities for at least a day during an attack. On average migraineurs experience 13 attacks per year, with those more severely affected having 2 /3 attacks each week. Migraine affects 8 million people in the UK and the World Health Organisation has rated it among the 20 most disabling lifetime conditions, which costs the UK £2.25 billion per year in lost working hours and doctors’ visits. Severe migraine attacks are classified by the World Health Organisation as among the most disabling illnesses, comparable to dementia, quadriplegia and active psychosis.
Despite the prevalence of migraine in the UK it remains an invisible condition with the sufferer often remaining isolated and the condition not being treated seriously by others.
It is estimated that between 10-20% of migraine sufferers are unable to work due to migraine.

Migraine Action
Migraine Action is a registered charity (number 207783) providing support and information to migraine patients and their families via a regular newsletter, numerous leaflets on all aspects of migraine and its treatment, a telephone helpline, a specialist headache nurse support service, website, education days around the UK and a pen-pal scheme. The charity also works to raise general awareness of this still much-misunderstood condition and raises funds to support specialist migraine clinics and research into the diagnosis, treatment and cure of migraine and other headache disorders. Migraine Action launched its Young Migraineurs Campaign in 2009, including information packs for teachers and school nurses and three-age specific websites. Migraine Action is a totally independent membership charity and its core work is funded solely by donations and membership subscriptions. Membership costs £25 annually.
