Intermediate and Advanced Encaustic Workshop with Charlie Ciali at the Fallbrook School of the Arts

Date: Oct. 22 - 24, 2015
Time: 10 am - 4 pm
Cost: $ 375.00 incl. all materials

Encaustic paint was first used over 5,000 years ago in Greece when the Greeks used wax to seal their ships. Eventually they added pigment to decorate the boats followed by the use of this medium to paint funeral portraits that where placed over the heads of mummies. Jasper Johns brought this art form back to life in the 20th Century, which has become a popular technique.

The word encaustic comes from the Greek word meaning “to burn in”. Wax is used in a liquid state to paint beautiful transparent or opaque surfaces that allow the artist to work into the painting in a variety of ways. In addition encaustics may be used to create sculptures as well as paintings.

Whereas beginners are welcome in this workshop and will quickly learn the process of encaustic painting, those who have taken an encaustic workshop in the past will find this to be a way to explore a variety of new techniques including how to use encaustic sculpturally. Combined with mixed media or just encaustic medium the possibilities are endless. The class will encompass the creation of encaustic medium and pigments, use of the materials, photo transfer, safe studio practices, and much more. Tools and equipment will be supplied however, participants are encouraged to bring items they would like to work with.
