Harry Clinton Bowden (1907–1965) Vintage Photos & Works on Paper

ArtZone 461 Gallery is pleased to announce a new show in the Side Gallery featuring works on paper by Harry C. Bowden (1907-1965). He was a painter, photographer, designer and filmmaker; a founding member of the American Abstract Artists (1936) in New York, he befriended Edward Weston and later made a movie about him. His work was the subject of an exhibition this year at the Worth-Ryder Art Gallery at the University of California - Berkeley.

Historic artist Harry Clinton Bowden came from Los Angeles and studied at the Los Angeles Art Institute; he worked in advertising before continued studies at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students’ League in New York City. He returned to California and studied at the Chouinard School of Art (Los Angeles) and later the University of California - Berkeley. While there he studied under Hans Hoffmann whom he eventually followed to New York and became his studio assistant. Also during this period in New York he worked with Fernand Leger, Willem de Kooning and George McNeil on murals for the French (Shipping) Line.

Bowden returned to California in 1941 and lived in Sausalito the rest of his life. He exhibited in museum as well as solo and group shows across the country beginning in 1932 and continuing to his death in 1965. He was known primarily as a painter and in later years, a photographer. The works in this show were formerly in the collection/archive of the Charles Campbell Gallery.
