What I Remember

Suppose you photograph something you saw in full color and later edited that picture to be a Black & White photograph. You have now altered and somehow also affected your memory of the original color image. Then, after looking at your new B&W photograph, how do you now see the original color image in your memory? Sometimes I remember the scene in color but in my memory I begin to see it in B&W as well.
I am fascinated with B&W photography because in my mind I get to choose the colors, the ranges of tones, the subtlety of the hues. Sometimes we never get to see the original scenes in color, think of the classic Pepper No. 30 photograph by Edward Weston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_No._30), we are told it was a green pepper, but you can still choose your own tone of green!
So after seeing a B&W photograph that I took of a color scene or of an object, what I remember is the subject, pure and simple, the details, the essence of the moment. This is not a knock against color photography, as my gallery shows, I also love color photography, with a rich tapestry of colors I like how a color photograph can talk to me. On the other hand, the details, the purity, and the possibilities of a B&W photograph doesn’t just talk to me, it allows me the grace of having a conversation.
