Stand Down the River

She is standing on the threshold in my dream
Her eyes have lost that long familiar gleam
One last look and then she slips away
I close my eyes, and turn away
And as I go she calls
And I can hear her say to me
“I will go and we will both be free.”

She has faded like the pages of a book
It’s still on the shelf, but now I rarely look
But every now and then I think of her
I’ll pull the book down off the shelf,
and as I turn the pages
I can hear her say to me
“Time will heal all our wounds, you will see.”

I can see her under the willow trees
Down by the river where she drifts away
Eyes closed softly, dreams roaming far away
Memories of early days
She’s trying hard to find a way
Hoping for a better day
Letting all her troubles wash away

She is wading across the river in my dream
Now the torrents flood what used to be a stream
And as she turns the tide pulls her away
And as she floats away she smiles
And laughs just like a child
I can hear her calling out to me
“I will go and we’ll be free
Time will heal us, you will see
When you’re ready you can follow me."
