Pure Thinking Post Office Portraits Inspire Carlow

There has been a great BUZZ around Carlow town during this years 2015 Carlow Arts Festival.
In time for the opening of this annual arts event a community group known as Pure Thinking (Founder Connie Byrne) collaborated with the local post office to arrange for a transformation of its 'tired' building into something quite exciting and interesting.

A group of artists gathered together within a series of workshops facilitated by artist Iwona O'Reilly to create and develop their large-scaled portraits of inspiratational Carlow people. Each artist chose their inspirational person for individual reasons, some relatives, local characters, historical, sporting or artistic figures or a kindred soul enjoying life to the full.

I chose to draw Ed O'Connell from my local village of Rathvilly. Ed is a retired lecturer of Industrial Instrumentation at what was then known as Carlow Regional Technical College (now Carlow IT). He is enjoying life painting, singing, playing music, gardening, fishing and having fun with his many friends.

I am thrilled to see Ed's portrait amongst others on the post office building. It has been a fantastic project to have been involved with It has been an opportunity to make new friends and advance my own artistic skills too. As a result I am currently exhibiting (June 2015) with two of the artists from our Portrait project, alongside Rim Aad Quinn and Valerie James during Carlow Arts Festival.

So the next time you visit Carlow town be sure to pay a visit to this 'famous' Irish Post Office as I am sure there will be none like it in Ireland for quite a while.
