Mind the Gap

I'm not referring to the subway.
I'm talking about a different sort of gap; a different sort of edge.
I'm talking about one's edging in their painting or drawing.

Your edges are important. They're vital, really. You can make your edges as crisp or as soft as you desire, but it's usually apparent when an edge simply needs more attention. It's a detail, but it's a very important one. This sort of attention to detail is one of those things that can drastically affect the x-factor in your work.

If your desired effect is one of detail and clarity, do make sure that all of the edges or lines in your piece are crisp where they need to be. I see this as a problem-area a lot when people are painting or drawing forest or other foliage. Look very closely. Do you see a gap between your leaves and your background that should not be there? Make sure you go back and refine things. Little details go a very long way.

So mind the gap. ;)
