Klompen

Clogs are one of the oldest known types of footwear in the lowlands of Europe. Depending on the culture, they might be made of wood or a combination of wood and leather. The oldest surviving clogs where found in the Netherlands from 1230. But the custom of wearing clogs could be much older. Often considered the shoes of peasants, clogs are known for their convenience, economy and ruggedness. And clogs are still proudly worn today in many cultures because of their durability and practicality.

Each culture has its own name and history for their type of clog. In the Netherlands, a clog is a klomp and two or more are klompen. Modern day klompen are smooth with rounded edges. But the klompen shown are the more traditional style with rough edges and pointed tips, popular as tourist souvenirs, as indeed these are.

Shoes are critical in many tasks because they protect us and they enable us. The wrong footwear can be disastrous. So make sure you choose well and are prepared for the task ahead.

"For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared."
-- Ephesians 6:15 NLT
