Geometry of The Hard-Mode Concept Series.

It’s been a busy month being a jack-of-all-trades. Painting, writing, building my website, developing a social media presence and getting a night job at Shoprite. If I didn’t have a clear vision for my artistic career, I wouldn’t be able to persist. I would shrink back in apathy, entertaining myself with opiate-like escapist fantasies. Art is a gateway between the real and the imagined. Seeing the stuff of dreams before my eyes reaffirms my reality. It makes me feel alive and present in this world.

Lisa, my Babycakes, commends me for painting without the external validation of commercial success. Her Tarot-reading business organically pays for itself along the way. Painting takes time and publicity before there is any return on investment. I love her. She is my oracle priestess and social moral compass. When I’m being a total dick, she is the first person to point it out.

The truth is: I think like a dick on many levels. Sometimes I feel like the lead character Dexter, from the Showtime series. I analyse others with “logical” self-righteousness and little empathy. Slashing thoughts at others with little care for their feelings doesn’t make me very nice. As The Dude sayeth: “You’re not wrong, Walter, you’re just an asshole.”

During the Shoprite job interview, manager Nick asked me what customer service means to me. “Understanding and relating to the person’s individual needs. Then fulfilling those needs without compromising personal and business integrity.” I said it on fly, like auto-pilot. I thought about it afterwards. A little empathy goes a long way into driving my creative vision home. For years I’ve been making art in an ivory tower. It was an A and B conversation, an infertile line without an audience. Now I love my esoteric paintings, but I’m just as passionate about my new pop series: Hard Mode. It's a series of paintings set in video-game worlds. The magnetic power of pop, the visual poetry of formalism, and suggestive narratives create a magick triangle. Within this field of operation, empathy is the Yoni. It's The Eye perceiving my generation’s love of virtual experiences in video-game worlds. I hope the series will serve as a bizarre rabbit hole for my courageous fans to explore alternate worlds.

Speaking of fans, I love them! I just got my first Iphone weeks ago, and I’m hooked on the buzz it makes every time someone notices my art posts. I'm most invested in Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I will then check to see what they’re all about at a glance. Narcissist that I am, I check their profiles looking for reflections of myself. I try to go beyond that and find a shared truth, unless of course, when it’s a fucking spam-bot. Seriously though, I could be in the depths of hell wrestling my demons and that buzz will bring me hope. Hope for a connection with someone who gets it, and shares it with others.
