I met Donna Marsh here in Montreal in 2008. This was back when posting art online was just kicking off. I stumbled across a painting of hers entitled “…ing” (the painting depicts one of the ubiquitous Irving gas stations dotting the New Brunswick landscape). I loved this painting so I shot off an enthusiastic comment to Donna to let her know how I felt about it and I think that in her modest, understated way she was pretty happy about what I had to say. We became art buddies.
We’ve exchanged more than a few emails over the years, and shown up at each other’s shows. I bought “…ing” and later on she bought one of mine. Every time I talk to Donna, I have that wonderful feeling one gets with certain people, where when you catch up – even if you haven’t spoken in a while, you just pick it up from where you left off in a breezy, natural way. Love that feeling.
I’m a huge fan of Donna’s work and when I needed to feature an artist to adequately set the bar for future artists entering the competitions we feature here, I thought of her and her fabulous body of work (just for the record, though, we love all kinds of art, not just landscapes).
Donna Marsh has breathed new life into landscape painting. Her paintings are full of vitality. They are energetic, colorful, compositionally assured and painted in a very particular, loose manner. They are also anchored in a serious work philosophy. Donna is a chronicler of unfolding history and a pictorial map maker.
I hope you enjoy our awesome conversation…
