Color in Photography

Some friends of mine have noticed the way I use color in some of my images. When I am out shooting photographs, I look for colors which will attract and keep my interest. I feel the colors and/or different combinations of colors can create a theme. It can give the image an exciting feel, a somber tone or show an object in a different light.

Use of color in a well composed image will communicate on an emotional level. It can help tell a story and keep the viewer engaged. In certain situations, colors can have meanings, a form of non-verbal communication. For example, a blue color can represent trust and integrity, and yellow can be optimistic and cheerful. Red stands for energy, passion and determination but it can also mean anger.

I love to shoot in the early morning or just before dusk, when the light has a beautiful golden hue. And there's a short period at dusk just before it gets dark when the sky is a deep blue, such as in my farmhouse pictures.

I feel I've succeeded when someone stops and is drawn into the scene, when he or she can somehow relate to the image. It's all about telling a story and helping them to understand what I was trying to say.
