Motivation

Lets talk about motivation for a moment, shall we? It is my opinion that motivation is what makes art, well, art. "I am going to make that thing" and so we do. Not because it needs to be made, that is craft, and not because we have to make it, that is work. We are artists, right? So we decide to make a thing or to capture a thing, or to create a thing, and that thing is art. There is a decision behind it, and so there is motivation behind it.

I try to be as critical as possible about my own art. About my motivation, which is always emotional (funny-because I am not an overtly emotional person I'd say I'm pretty even headed and happy.) I often see artwork here, however which does not seem to have any emotionality at all, it is swirls made in MS Paint, or an ok Photo with a crackle filter effect applied. there is no love, no hate, no longing, and no peace. it is frustrating to me that such work is so easily made and so easily posted. It is frustrating that some people don't seem to want to put in the thought or to really get involved in their "art." am I alone here? I have more respect for the ungifted artist who tries to be emotive than the gifted one who does not.

I have to agree with you. Most of the "art" I see seems to be completely devoid of all life and emotion. Everything has to be palatable , child and family friendly. I have to admit in frustration and the urging of friends and family I have went into the art for the masses avenue...but the more I did it the more i couldn't hide the demons that lurk in the corners. I invite you to have a look around my site and tell me what you think. http://reed-novotny.pixels.com/index.html?tab=images
